The In-betweens

Don't you just hate the in-betweens? It's seems like everywhere I look people are "in-between" right now. In-between jobs. In-between homes. In-between relationships. In-between schools. In-between terms. In-between seasons.

I hate that unsettled anxiety that seems to rule the in-betweens. That feeling that you've left something behind but not quite reached whatever is ahead. It's like your heart is temporarily homeless, and that can be icky and scary and suffocating all at once. I know. I've been there.

Sometimes the in-betweens are just short periods that we can endure because the end is in sight, but sometimes we can't see the end at all. For the Israelites, the in-betweens were 40 years! 40 years in-between where they came from and where they were going. Can you imagine? 40 years?!

But, you know what? It was in between Egypt and the promised land, that God parted the Red Sea, sent bread from heaven, opened a fountain from a rock! It was in-between the sea and the ruler's house that the woman with the flow of blood touched Jesus and was healed. And in-between sheep-herding and Saul's court that David was anointed king. And in between the shores of the sea of Galilee that Jesus walked on the water. And in-between her uncle's house and the throne that Esther saved her people.

I hope, for your sake, that whatever in-between place you're in right now, it isn't going to be 40 years, but however long it is, dear reader, don't miss out on it. Don't tune out like during a long commercial break or in the ridiculously long queue at the drive through. I know you want to. You want to be somewhere, anywhere but there. But the point is that right there in that icky, scary in-between place God has prepared manna for your soul and will open fountains of living water for your spirit. And it could just be that in that in-between place, you'll find a miracle.
